Box Office: ‘Toy Story 4’ Petering Out After Barely Cracking $50,000
It looks as though Pixar’s latest juggernaut is on its last legs at the box office. After an opening weekend gross of $120.9 million back on June 21, Toy Story 4 only made $52,000 this past weekend.
This shouldn’t come as too surprising of news, considering Toy Story 4 has been on streaming platforms for nearly a month. By the time Toy Story 4 became available digitally on Oct. 1, the film’s theater count had dropped to 243.
After owning the widest G-rated release of all time back on June 21 with 4,575 theaters, Toy Story 4’s theater count dipped all the way down to just 89 this past weekend (the film’s 21st weekend in theaters). Surprisingly, that was good enough to rank 29th at the weekend box office, which is eight spots higher than its 37th place finish two weekends ago.

Toy Story 4’s weekend revenue remained above $10 million until its seventh week in theaters, and above $1 million until its twelfth week in theaters. The film actually saw a re-release back on Labor Day weekend (Aug. 30-Sept. 2) that increased its theater count by 1,895. But after that it’s been a slow, steady decline in the movie’s theater presence.
It looks as though the animated film’s domestic gross will just eclipse $434 million, making it the fifth-highest-grossing animated film of all time. It looks like the fourth film in the franchise will finish just ahead of movies like Toy Story 3, Frozen and The Secret Life of Pets, but will remain behind cartoons like Shrek 2, Finding Dory, The Lion King (2019) and Incredibles 2.
In foreign markets, Toy Story 4 grossed $638.2 million, bringing its international total to $1.072 billion. On the all-time box office rankings, that ranks one spot ahead of Toy Story 3 at No. 30. Since the movie’s box office revenue has come to a standstill, it seems as though Toy Story 4 will remain behind films like The Dark Knight Rises, Transformers: Age of Extinction and Skyfall.
